Updates to The Open Mic’s Privacy Policy & GDPR

Howdy friends!

We know that you are probably tired of what seems like an infinite stream of emails and messages from every company that says that they’re updating their Privacy Policy.

Trust us, we’re as tired as you are, but we also believe that privacy is extremely important and we applaud this new EU initiative called European General Data Protection Regulation (aka GDPR).

We believe it’s an important step towards better transparency, better data storage and processing practices and a big win for all the people around the globe.

Since we have a lot of people from EU who either access or have an active account on The Open Mic we decided to update our Privacy Policy to include GDPR-friendly language that helps you better understand what data we collect, how we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, who has access to it, how we protect it and what rights you have under GDPR.

Please, spend a few minutes of your time to read our updated Privacy Policy & Terms of Service.

Your continued use of our Services constitutes your acceptance of this new policy.

We also invite you to read our recent blog post about all the changes that we've made so far: https://theopenmic.co/gdpr/

Working on a New Privacy Policy and Registration Flow

Howdy friends!

As you know, The European General Data Protection Regulation (aka GDPR) is literally around the corner and we're actively preparing our Services to be fully compliant.

That's why we'd like to give you some heads up on some changes that you need to expect in the next few days.

Here they are:

  • New Privacy Policy with a lot more clarity for your reading pleasure. We'll send you an email and publish a blog post and a post on our forum and in this changelog when it goes live. Please read it carefully as your continued use of our Services implies your acceptance of this new policy (to be honest, nothing major has changed, we just improved the language to make it more readable);
  • New Registration form that actively asks for consent and encourages all new members read our terms and privacy policy.
  • Registration forms may not work temporarily while we make these design changes (Sorry about that, but legal compliance is important, so, please, bear with us)
  • A blog post explaining all the changes (it'll be on our home page);
  • An email about all these changes with a link to remain on our mailing list (we will remove all subscribers who do not opt in, so, please, take the required action when you get this email (if you still want to be on our mailing list, of course);

That's about it!

Thank you so much for your patience and support and for using The Open Mic!

Hugs from Toronto!

GDPR Compliance and The Open Mic

Howdy friends!

As you probably know by now, The European General Data Protection Regulation (aka GDPR) will take effect on May 25, 2018 aiming to regulate how personal data of individuals in EU territory gets collected and used.

Even though The Open Mic is outside of EU we're still required to make sure we're compliant with this new regulation, so we wanted to give you heads up on what you should expect in the upcoming weeks.

We believe GDPR is an important step towards making the world a better place and it's a big win for all the users and consumers around the globe.

Even though we do try keep everything transparent on The Open Mic, we realize there's always room for improvement. And with this new regulation it's a good time for us to improve a few things.

Here's what you should expect:

  • New registration process for new members that will proactively ask for your consent and will encourage everyone to read and agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy;
  • Updates to our Privacy Policy with a primary focus on simplifying the language and making sure we thoroughly explain what data we collect when you use our service and how it is used;
  • More details in our Privacy Policy on how your data is stored and what 3rd parties help us process it;

What we ask from you: we're kindly asking for your patience while we're implementing these things. As you probably know, The Open Mic is a community-driven project and is managed by a team of volunteers who do this on their own free time.

Based on the information that we've gathered so far, it will require some serious time commitment from us and we'd appreciate your patience while we work on implementing all these things.

Thank you so much for your understanding and support.

Cheers! 🙌

Following a few complaints from our dear members we've updated the copy of some of he notifications we might send you to make unsubscribing easier.

If you received an email from us and you want to stop receiving it just look for text that says: "Don't want to receive these emails ever again?" for some handy instructions on how to update your email preferences.

😱 Bug: Emoji don't work in profiles

confused emoji GIF-downsized.gif

Howdy friends!

This is just a quick update about a bug that we found recently: if you try to use emoji when editing your profile, your updates won't be saved.

We know how annoying it might be, so we'll do our best to add a proper emoji support in the future.

We'll keep your posted and in the meantime, we apologize for any inconvenience 🙇

🐱‍💻 We're solving the mystery of increased downtime

hacking time.gif

Howdy friends!

Some of you might have noticed that we've been experiencing some downtime lately (around 30-50 minutes each day in the past couple days). It seems like we're exhausting our server resources so we dispatched our investigation team to see what's going on.

We're likely to do some site maintenance and database optimization while we at it, so you might experience some minor bugs here and there. Please bear with us as we try to make The Open Mic even better.

Cheers! 🙌
