Site maintenance February 16-20, 2017

Let the bug hunt begin! 🐛🔨😱

Howdy friends! We'll be doing some site maintenance from February 16 up until February 20, 2017 to hunt down a few nasty bugs. We'll try not to break anything, but we can't promise 🤓

Anyway, if you notice anything weird, please report it using our super duper awesome support system. Thanks!

Improvement to the way the featured articles are displayed

As you know we occasionally hand-pick interesting articles and feature them in a slider on our home page. When we did that those articles would disappear from the main section on the home page. As it turns out a lot of people don't even use our fancy slider *sigh*

So... from this point on all featured articles will be displayed BOTH in the slider AND in a list of all articles on our home page. Thanks for this suggestion Elena!

We've added GALA to the list of association

For reasons unknown GALA (aka Globalization and Localization Association) was missing from the list of available associations when you were editing you profile. Well, not anymore :) Thanks for spotting this one, Stacey!

You can now select multiple preferred contact methods

Hey friends! When you're editing your Open Mic profile you can now select several preferred contact methods. Thanks for the suggestion, Andriy!

Site maintenance on February 9, 2017

Hey friends! We'll be doing some site maintenance to track some pesky bugs. You might notice some weird behavior. Please report any issues by opening a support ticket. Thanks!

We fixed a broken link in the welcome email

Howdy friends! We just fixed a broken link in our welcome email. For some reason a button that was supposed to link to our directory was broken. We fixed that :)

We've added an option for those who have less than 1 year of experience

Howdy friends! If you're a student or a recent graduate and you've just signed up for The Open Mic account you might have noticed that our Year of Experience field started from 1 to 5 years.

Obviously that wasn't a very good option for you, so we added a new option: "Less than 1 year of experience". Feel free to edit your profile if this is applies to you :)

We've improved our identity verification process

Hey friends! We've made some changes and streamlined our identity verification process. If you've submitted a request to verify your identity on The Open Mic you should now receive an email with additional instructions and a video that guides you through the entire process.

Here's what you'll need to do if you want to verify your identity on The Open Mic:

  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Click Request Verification link
  3. We'll send you an email with additional instructions within 24 hours :)

If you haven't received a follow up email from us with additional instructions. Feel free to open a support ticket and we'll be happy to help.

Add you native language when editing your profile

You can now add your native language when editing your Open Mic profile.

  • Log into your Open Mic account.
  • Click Edit Profile in the menu.

We've fixed the map in our directory

The beautiful map that you can in our directory wasn't working properly after recent site maintenance and updates. We fixed it 🤓

Don't forget to add your address when editing your profile if you want to be displayed on our global map of translators.

We fixed HTML notifications about new comments

If you're an author you might have noticed that email notifications about new comments included a bunch of broken links for comment moderation (Trash, Trash and Ban IP, View in browser, etc.)

We've removed those broken links to avoid any confusion :) You can still moderate all comments in the front-end, though. Simply go to the comment section of your article to moderate all comments.

We'll be doing some maintenance work

Hello friends! Will be doing some maintenance work in the next few days, so you might notice some bugs here and there. If something stops working please report it by opening a support ticket:

Check out our year in review

Howdy friends! We just published our year in review and shared everything we've learned in 2016. We talk about what went well for us in 2016 and what didn't as well as share our plans for 2017!

Check it out and don't forget to share:

Changes to our Thank You page

We've changed the Thank You page which you see when you publish new stories on The Open Mic. Now you'll be able to view the list of all your stories and you'll be able to quickly navigate to the article that you've just published or edit existing drafts.

Check out our brand new forum!

The Open Mic Forum is here and it's glorious! You can find our forum by going to Menu > Community > Forum or by simply visiting this link:

We've recorded a detailed overview of our new forum and all its cool features, so make sure to check it out once you got a free minute!

We're looking forward to fun discussions!

You can now report inappropriate comments

In the attempt to make reading and writing experience even more enjoyable for all our readers and writers we've developed a comment reporting system that will help us protect our community from inappropriate and rude comments.

Any registered community member can now easily report inappropriate comments with a click of a button.

The reported comment will be temporarily hidden from the comment section. The author of the article will be immediately notified about newly reported comment and will be able to take further actions: approve, trash or mark the reported comment as spam.

We're hoping this new feature will help us make The Open Mic a safe place for everyone.

Authors can now moderate comments!

We love giving our authors more control over comment section to make sure we create a friendly and safe environment without any trolls, spammers or nasty comments.

With our new update every author can now easily moderate comments under their own articles, meaning that you'll be able to:

  • Trash comments;
  • Trash comments and ban spammers by IP;
  • Allow users to post comments without moderation;
  • Moderate flagged comments via email;

Furthermore when a comment is flagged by our community comment author will see a message that their comment is awaiting moderation:

When this happens the author of the article will receive an email that invites them to approve or trash the comment.

Just click Approve, Trash or Spam. This will open an email that looks like this:

All you have to do is click Send the comment will be approved (or trashed and marked as spam, depending on what you decide).

You can also moderate comments by going to the comment section of any particular article that you've published on The Open Mic.

You'll see a set of options allowing you to easily moderate comments.

We're hoping this will make comment moderation easy and fun for all our awesome writers! :)

We've made a few CSS tweaks

Howdy friends! We made a few minor yet very nice changes to our site's CSS. Changes include:

  • different font of all headings to make them more visible (before both body and heading had the same font, it looked really odd, so we changed that)
  • changes to color palette used for the buttons on our site (to make sure it fits in nicely with our new logo)
  • changes to the way links are displayed in articles (they're now clearly visible and grab readers' attention.
  • some minor fixes across all pages to make sure all fonts and colors used are unified and follow a specific style guide.

P.S.: You might want to clear your browser cache for changes to take effect.
